Hello Francis. Everbuild Dustproofer leaves a thin film/coating on the surface. You will need to sand the surface with 150 grit sandpaper first before applying paint. Otherwise, the paint will peel.

I was planning on going back with the Concrete Specialties TS210 oil repellant. I spoke to the manufacturer and they felt that etching would be sufficient but also warned that every scenario is different.

Hello Gary. Most coatings require proper concrete prep before application. Etching is usually the minimum requirement. Most coatings also state that sealers should not be present. Check the technical data sheets for the coating you want to apply. Acid etching typically does not work well on sealed concrete. The reason is that the sealer resists moisture intrusion. The acid solution is a liquid that needs to penetrate the concrete in order to react with the minerals and free lime present. If it can’t penetrate very well or fairly quickly it will not work. You can always test a few areas with a solution of 1 part acid to 4 parts water and see if you get an aggressive bubbling reaction. If you do, then it most likely will work. We have an article about proper acid etching here. Just remember, a coating is only as good as how well it is adhered to the surface. Proper prep for coatings is the most important step and where many people give the least amount of priority. Peeling and a bad experience is the result. What coating do you want to apply?
