Hi Gianna. An N95 like the 3M Aura is the minimum approved protection from concrete silica dust. It is limited by time and exposure. If you change it out frequently when grinding you will be OK. The type of respirator that Mark referred to in his comments is the half-faced respirators with dual replaceable cartridges.

I'm confused at the comment about respirators costing $25-$30 - N95 respirators like the 3M Aura can be bought for much cheaper than that. Are these not effective for preventing inhalation of silica dust? What type of respirator is best for this?

Hi Jesse. There is no hard rule about this. Typically, all repairs are done first then the floor is profiled. However, you can do it the other way around if it's more convenient. The etching won't affect the crack repair product.

great read, you guys suggested a 93 percent solids epoxy from garage floor llc for my situation and i got a 500sqft kit for under 600 with top coat. Beginning prep work soon! My only confusion is this: do i etch before or after the crack fillers are complete? Going to purchase the rustolium kit mentioned in this article, I have heard it both ways.

Hi Cassandra. Depending on how it's used, a floor like this will last 10-15 years before requiring additional maintenance. What's nice about systems like this, is that the additional maintenance to prolong the life is usually just the application of another clear coat. Once the clear coat starts to wear to the flakes and color coat, all that is required is to rough up the floor via sanding and then apply a new clear coat to make look almost brand new.

Hello, after seeing the pics and reading the story, my husband and I are interested in doing this project as well. About how many years would you say this type of flooring could possibly last/time frame?
Thanks
